Internet TV Can’t Compete with DirecTV – But Why Try?

DirecTV satellite dishOn this snowy day in #HRVA, I’m in the office with NPR talking in the background. They are running a show on Internet TV vs cable / satellite television. Really? Why do people think that Internet TV can ever compete with cable and satellite?

What about live sporting events? What about new shows?

There are great features and advantages for watching my DirecTV on the big screen.
There are great features and advantages for watching my Netflix streaming on the big screen.

But I want both. Separately, for me to make a choice what features I want at that time.

Side note: I know some people think they like this but I will never want to watch TV or a movie on my BlackBerry, or any smartphone. Clint Eastwood belongs on my big screen. Not on a handheld.

Husband & Wife at the Altar Updating Twitter & Facebook Status [video]

This is a guy after my own heart. This is awesome. He stops the minister in the middle of his wedding to update his Twitter timeline and Facebook status to ‘married’.

Twitter update by @TheSoftwareJedi:

Standing at the altar with @TracyPage where just a second ago, she became my wife! Gotta go, time to kiss my bride. #weddingday

Video on YouTube:

I have a lot of family scattered around the country and we all use Facebook a lot to keep in touch. So when Tracy and I were engaged, most of my family found out via Facebook because we updated our statuses.

I surprised not only my guests, but also Tracy by pulling out my phone and posting on Facebook and Twitter from the altar during out wedding. I had her phone ready in my pocket, so when she asked for it I could hand it to her. No one knew about this except the minister, and myself.

The Lean-Forward Advertising Medium

A good internet video, says Kelsey Group (www.kelseygroup.com) analyst Michael Boland, can be more powerful than traditional advertising because viewers are sitting at their computers instead of on their couches.

Watch a TV ad, and you’re likely to do no more than make a mental note of the product. Watch an ad on YouTube, and you can immediately search the company’s website. “It’s that lean-forward medium,” Boland says.

PR Disaster! United Breaks Guitars

Wow. When will big corporations learn that yesterday’s non-Internet days are over? Consumers do have a voice. And an audience that wants to hear them!

Big Biz:
Train your customer support reps.
Train your managers.
Geez, educate your employees and make sure they know that consumers put food on their tables.

Watch the video below on what can happen when a large company like United Airlines just plain doesn’t care who puts food on their tables.

Full Story: http://www.davecarrollmusic.com/story/united-breaks-guitars

In the spring of 2008, Sons of Maxwell were traveling to Nebraska for a one-week tour and my Taylor guitar was witnessed being thrown by United Airlines baggage handlers in Chicago. I discovered later that the $3500 guitar was severely damaged. They didnt deny the experience occurred but for nine months the various people I communicated with put the responsibility for dealing with the damage on everyone other than themselves and finally said they would do nothing to compensate me for my loss. So I promised the last person to finally say no to compensation (Ms. Irlweg) that I would write and produce three songs about my experience with United Airlines and make videos for each to be viewed online by anyone in the world. United: Song 1 is the first of those songs. United: Song 2 has been written and video production is underway. United: Song 3 is coming. I promise. Follow me at http://twitter.com/DaveCarroll . Ad Age says TV Advertising still the Big Boy

A new Advertising Age article says that television advertising is still the package that rules the advertising world.

A soon to be released study by Nielson says that even to reach youth in today’s digital age, nothing can touch television.

I’ll give more details later but what do you think? Does your teen still respond to television as much as YouTube?

Try Reading the Rules Shankopotamus

I watched every commercial during the Super Bowl this year. At least, I thought I did. Somehow I missed this one. Hilarious!

We were out last night with friends and Jennifer & Cameron when she asked if I thought the shankopotamus commercial was funny. Embarrassingly, I said I didn’t remember that one.

So today I hunted it down on YouTube. Funny. Funny. Funny. E*TRADE has a good thing going with their baby commercials. See for yourself. What do you think?
