CEOs Need to See Through Walls

The key to reforming capitalism lies in creating shared valueby harnessing the power of business to solve social problems. Paradoxically, in these difficult economic times, the business opportunities hidden in our urgent social problems offer the greatest potential for profit and growth most businesses will ever face. But there is a trick to discovering these opportunities: It takes a CEO who can see through walls to find them.

Why can’t HRVA have the business mindset of DC Metro?

While strolling through my regular feed reading this morning over coffee, I pulled up to a post by Ted Leonsis, one of favorite bloggers and CEOs. If you don’t know Ted, read about him here. He’s a fascinating individual.

Ted’s post was titled, Edge City. You can see a partial reprint below but essentially Ted is touting Washington DC metro having absorbed the Northern Virginia surrounding cities into the DC business district along with the hundreds of thousands of “young, educated, and wealthy” Virginians.

The blog post is short. Be sure the read it. But my point is – why can’t Hampton Roads have this mindset? We have the geography. We have tourism. We have the industry. We have the talent. We have the ingenuity. But we have no single leadership group stepping forward. We have 13 (or so) cities that all want to act alone.

Why can’t HRVA have the business mindset of DC Metro?

Northern Virginia has become an extension of Washington DC.

It is fast growing, young, educated, and wealthy.

There is more office space in Tyson’s Corner than there is in Miami.

We may have bad traffic, but we sure have great demographics and growth.

Virginian-Pilot Covers Hampton Roads Tweetup

Twitter users get a little face time at Va. Beach ‘tweetup’

VIRGINIA BEACH

So, you know all those people who spend so much time talking to each other on Twitter? They also like to meet in person, as they did Wednesday evening at a “tweetup.”

More than 90 Twitter users met at Gordon Biersch restaurant at Town Center to see each other in the flesh. Most were professionals networking for business and personal reasons.

“A tweetup is just a gathering of people that use Twitter,” said Naoma Doriguzzi, 32, who has hosted about 10 this year. “Just meeting the people behind Twitter.”

Some Twitter users on Wednesday wore suits; others wore jeans. What they had in common was use of social media to network, meet people and, for many, do business.

Keith Parnell, 46, of Norfolk is the founder of JASE Group, an advertising and marketing company. At a tweetup, people talk about everything, he said, just as they do on Twitter.

“They’re growing relationships,” he said. “They’re growing both personal and they’re growing business relationships.”

Jennifer Taylor, 26, of Suffolk said she got a job interview Wednesday with a marketing company, lined up by someone who followed her on Twitter.

Most of the networking was in person Wednesday night, although some people brought laptops to update Twitter.

Twitter makes it easy for people to have conversations about anything, Doriguzzi said. She is the social media director for New American Mortgage and uses Twitter to brand herself. People she has never met have recognized her because of her photo on Twitter and Facebook, she said.

“I’ve met random people online that I’ve never met in person that I’ve actually done business with – new clients,” she said. “It’s an easy conversation. Because it’s so simple… you can talk to people in a casual way.”

Moms Say Marketers Ignore Their Needs

Moms Say Marketers Ignore Their Needs.” What? Still?

I was shocked to see this headline at BrandWeek.com. Why is this still going on?

According to M2Moms, 60 percent of moms feel that marketers are ignoring their needs, and 73 percent feel that advertisers don’t really understand what it’s like to be a mom.

I am embarrased to say that I live in this marketing and advertising industry. Why wouldn’t we understand a Mom’s mindset?

As CEOs of their households, Power Moms wield more influence than ever before: moms control 85 percent of household spending, and are worth more than $2 trillion to U.S. brands, as reported by the Marketing to Moms Coalition. Most moms work. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, in 1965, about 45 percent of women with children (under 18) were employed; by 2000, over 78 percent were. Whether they work out of the home, telecommute, or run a business from the home, media technology and the Internet have become a true enabler.

Need more incentive? We don’t. We haven’t for a while. JASE takes pride in being able to understand the needs of mothers.

What stories can you recall of the positives or negatives of this unexplained phenomenon?
