Sometimes dedication is not enough – the (lack of) results from USC Coach Lane Kiffin

Lane Kiffin, USC Trojans football

Lane Kiffin, head coach of the USC Trojans football team works hard. No one doubts his dedication. But everyone doubts his results, and sometimes his ability.

Here are two quotes that speak to his dedication to the USC football program.

The first is from his his wife: “A lot of good it does sleeping in your office; you still go 7-6.” Ouch!

The second is from his 3-year-old son: “‘Dad, do you think you could sleep over at my house?” That’s not good when your kid thinks you live elsewhere.

According to an article from, “When Kiffin leaves his home on Sunday mornings during the season, he doesn’t return until Thursday night. The couch is his bed most nights.”

So what is the payoff? Is the payoff the results of Nick Saban, the 4-time BCS National Championship head football coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide? Saban, by the way, is Kiffin’s idol.

T.J. Simers of the LA Times wrote a good article on the psychie of Lane Kiffin. It’s definitely worth a quick read.
