Microsoft Looking to Throw in $1B – $3B for the DELL Buyout. Why?

I’ve thought about this for a couple of days since I heard this rumor and I can’t for the life of me understand why Microsoft would do this. I know they rely on hardware vendors like DELL, Toshiba, and Lenovo to provide a platform for the Windows operating system. But why wouldn’t Microsoft take this opportunity to burst into the PC hardware world like they’ve done with the Surface in the tablet world and, in the past, the Xbox in the gaming world? Both of those initiatives are hugely successful so what would make them think they can’t make the PC hardware initiative work?

In my way of thinking, the ‘what’s the value’ answer is that Microsoft would control the whole environment (like Apple does) – hardware and software (OS). Less bugs. Less holes vulnerable to virus attacks. Another revenue stream. Seems like a win-win for Microsoft.

What do you think? Why wouldn’t Microsoft save their money on the DELL venture and do this?
